Breaking the Norms

MASCULINITY IN HIP HOP

Minority youth often exaggerate hyper-masculine behaviors in social situations in hope to gain respect from peers and to prove themselves. This type of "hip-hop and gangsta rap" perpetuates physical and sexual violence.

RACE IN HIP HOP

Due to neglect and poverty black youth are deprived and underexposed to cultural influences besides mass media other than racial sterrotypes. The lack of diversity in media culture has led to artists who are people of color feeling pressured to conform to cultural norms in order to gain social capital.

KEEP YA HEAD UP

And since we all came from a woman

Got our name from a woman and our game from a woman

I wonder why we take from our women

Why we rape our women, do we hate our women

Tupac is one of the first artists from his era to break the norm and called men out for taking advantage of women and began to question stereotypical gender roles for women. He attempts to tackel problems related to the woman's role in the house.
